A playground has been given an overhaul with new swings and slide after parents said it was not "engaging" enough.

New play equipment has been installed at Empire Drive within a new housing development in Carterton.

The original play equipment was installed by the developer but over time had become worn and lost its play value.

During a consultation process, people asked for new equipment be installed to make it safer and more engaging for the young children that play there.

New equipment includes a replaced basket swing, toddler climbing equipment, a football goal with basketball hoop, two seat swing, two springers, a timber zigzag stepper and balance beam, timber tram tracks, spinner, large climbing frame and a slide.

Surfacing has been added under the equipment and the existing seesaw retained.

Work on the refurbishment was scheduled to be completed by Friday, July 12 but contractors were delayed by a shortage of fencing supplies.

A safety inspector was also not available.

The new completion date was scheduled for Thursday, July 18, however, an issue was raised with the goal netting.

The official opening will take now take place on Monday, August 12 at 11am attended by the mayor Michele Mead, deputy mayor Natalie King and town council staff.
