An independent cinema in Oxford is set to close this summer.
The Ultimate Picture Palace in Jeune Street off Cowley Road will be shut for a summertime period of maintenance between Friday, August 2 and Thursday, August 8.
Dating back to 1911, the venue retains its art deco building intact including the original box office window opening onto the street.
In 2022, the cinema celebrated becoming a community-owned business after a campaign in which over 1,200 local investors bought shares.

A spokesperson for UPP said: “We will be open again as usual from Friday, August 9, with a brand new programme of new releases, special events, and seasons including coming-of-age drama Janet Planet, adrenaline-pumping disaster flick Twisters, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s masterful new release About Dry Grasses, playful revenge comedy Thelma, and a classic season looking at the works of Hungarian auteur Béla Tarr.
“Our August-September programme will be available online from Wednesday 31st July, and paper copies will be ready to collect at the cinema from Friday, August 2.
“See you on the other side.”
Significant changes were already made to the popular film spot earlier this year as a new bar was installed at the location.
