An Oxford woman has passed the halfway mark of her charity walk across the length of the UK.

Rachel Mortimer, 23, has already covered more than 750 miles of her 1,500-mile trek from John O’Groats in Scotland to Land’s End in Cornwall.

Opting to tackle the extra challenge of the Southwest Coastal Path as well, Ms Mortimer aims to finish her journey by August 31, four months after she set off.

She was motivated to fundraise for Save the Children due to the escalation of conflict in Gaza, and she has already hit her fundraising target of £5,000 for the international children’s charity.

After watching singer George Ezra's documentary ‘End to End’, she decided to raise the funds by walking from John O'Groats to Lands' End.

Her friends and family have accompanied her at intervals throughout the hike, but the majority of the journey has been completed solo.

She said: "I've found the walk tough but amazing.

"Although it's been physically challenging, especially across the Southwest coast path, being outside every day and meeting some amazing people along the way has been truly lovely.

"With the horrific conflict in Gaza, the war in Ukraine and many other humanitarian crises across the globe I thought it was important to support a charity who are supporting those experiencing huge instability and violence."
