Subway has reopened after a cockroach infestation at the M40 Welcome Break services near Oxford.

The service station at junction 8a near Wheatley was visited by South Oxfordshire District Council’s Environmental Health Officers on Monday, May 20.

Inspectors were prompted by a complaint that they received from a member of the public who had been to the services.

During their investigation, officers found evidence of a cockroach infestation in the food preparation and servery areas of three outlets.

These included KFC, Chopstix and Starbucks where a significant risk of food contamination and an imminent risk to the customers’ health was posed.

A Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice was placed on the service station and the impacted units closed immediately.

Nearby Subway also closed at the time of the cockroach infestation but South Oxfordshire District Council confirmed it was not being investigated like the others.

A council spokesperson said: “Subway was not included as part of the Hygiene Prohibition Notice because on the day our officers carried out the emergency investigation, there was insufficient evidence of an imminent risk to health to warrant the closure of that unit.

“Welcome Break however took the decision to close it themselves the following day as part of their own investigation and addressing of the issues.”

The other three businesses reopened recently but Subway had remained closed for longer with white hoardings around the unit.

Now after several weeks, the sandwich fast food restaurant is also back open and welcoming in customers.
