An historic pub has reopened following renovations with a freshly shortened name.

The Highway Inn - now just Highway - in Burford High Street now has a new interior similar to Highway's sister pub Bull in the town.

There is a 30-seat tapas restaurant which is designed to be cosy and informal and a private dining room for up to 10 people.

There is also a new bar solely for drinking, not shared with diners, which will have a hatch for serving customers who can sit outside on tables in the street in summer or by the fire in winter.

The existing 11 bedrooms have been completely refitted without any structural alterations and plastered with a Moroccan lime-based plaster called Tadelakt.

The Grade II listed building has provided rest and food to travellers since 1480 when Burford’s location between Oxford, Bath and Gloucester made it an important staging post for wool merchants.

Bull - formerly The Old Bull Hotel - and the next-door post office and newsagent, were converted into a luxury boutique hotel by owner PR guru Matthew Freud which opened last year.

Rebecca Riley, previous manager of the Highway Inn and now general manager of both Highway and Bull, said: “We are thrilled to announce that The Highway Inn’s doors are back open, and we can’t wait to welcome our cherished local customers into the newly refurbished space.

"While we’ve given the place a fresh new look, we’ve made sure the wonderful team remains the same and it still feels like home.

"Enjoy catching up at our stunning new bar and savour the exciting new tapas-style dishes in our restaurant.

"Thank you all for your patience during our renovation—we can't wait to see you again.”
