An Indian restaurant in Oxfordshire requires “major improvement” according to hygiene inspectors.

Royal Spice on Coxwell Street in Faringdon was visited by Vale of White Horse District Council’s Environmental Health team on Wednesday, June 19.

Inspectors were unimpressed with what they found, stating that 'major improvement' was necessary and handing the business a one-out-of-five food hygiene rating.

One key issue at the restaurant was the staff’s management of food safety which was also marked as needing 'major improvement'.

This refers to whether there is a system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served at the venue is safe to eat.

It also concerns whether there is evidence that staff know about food safety and if the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

Royal Spice also had an issue with its hygienic food handling as inspectors found that improvement was 'necessary' in this regard.

This refers to the preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage of food.

Despite facing problems in that regard, the eatery’s cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building were described as needing “generally satisfactory”.

This includes having an appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene.

The Oxford Mail has approached Royal Spice for comment on the rating.
