Pictures posted by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue show the shocking aftermath of a fire which stemmed from a combine harvester yesterday afternoon (July 29) near Wallingford

Four crews attended the fire at Lonesome Farm Cottages in Crowmarsh Gifford after Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 2.25pm.

High pressure hose reels were used to tackle the fire and crews were still on site at 4.35pm damping the area down.

Householders in the area reported hearing a loud bang before seeing thick, black smoke.

It said: "Today, crews from Wallingford, Didcot, Henley and Royal Berkshire Fire Service attended a combine harvester fire that had begun spreading to nearby fields.

"Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of farmers and firefighters, we managed to contain the blaze to the unfortunate combine harvester and around 20 square meters of standing crop.

"We’d like to remind everyone of the highly useful What3Words app which can be used in emergencies.

"This app can pinpoint your location within a couple of meters, making it invaluable, especially when in the countryside."

Emergency services, including Henley on Thames Fire Station, have previously called on the public to download the potentially life-saving free app, which is used by over 85 per cent of the UK’s emergency services.
