Wantage town markets have seen another big summer turnout after 778 years.

The markets have been held in Wantage since 1246 with some current traders even coming to the town for over 30 years themselves.

There was another great turnout on Saturday as crowds flocked to purchase food, jewellery and more.

There were more than a dozen stalls at the market, some of which included Mrs Hubbard’s Jewellery Cupboard – a woman who makes handmade sterling silver jewellery from her home in Wantage to a Greek delicatessen and several bakery stalls among others. 

“It’s a long-standing tradition that we are very proud of,” said town centre manager Andrea Yates.

“We like to encourage local small businesses to attend, made up of local people who are crafting and creating in their homes or home workshops.

“We also like to add a bit of atmosphere with live music by local musicians.

“On Saturday we had David Reynolds who plays well-known guitar instrumentals from The Shadows, Santana, Pink Floyd and more and throws in one or two of his own compositions.

“We also had Cameron who sings and plays guitar and flute and covers popular songs and tunes from the 60s, 70s and 80s.”
