An initiative aimed at tackling loneliness through bus journeys is set to return to Oxford this summer.

The Chatty Bus project run by Oxford Bus Company, with the support of Age UK Oxfordshire and Oxfordshire Mind, will be back on the new 280 service on Tuesday, August 6.

Volunteers will chat to passengers during their journey between Thame and Oxford.

Customers travelling on the Chatty Bus journeys will benefit from a 50 per cent discount, meaning non-concessionary bus pass holders can take the journey for £1.

The initiative was first launched in 2019, and is back this year due to its earlier successes. Oxford Bus Company has teamed up with the two charities to further strengthen the support provided.

Luke Marion, managing director of Oxford Bus Company, said: "Loneliness remains a real issue that affects so many people in our community and we hope the return of Chatty Bus will help make a difference.

"Research has found buses form an important social function and by providing extra engagement in partnership with two excellent charities we hope to deliver more support and raise awareness of the issue and the help that is available."

Chatty Bus will feature a variety of games and information about activities and social groups. Participants will also be urged to enjoy a day out in Oxford before returning home.

The initiative returns after Oxford Bus Company’s parent company, Go-Ahead Group, signed the government’s Employers Pledge in 2022, committing to improving social connections and reducing loneliness.

Buses can provide a lifeline to people living in isolation, as a third of Britons say they catch the bus to have some human contact.

Paul Ringer, CEO of Age UK Oxfordshire, said: "We’re really pleased to be partnering with Oxford Bus Company again this year for Chatty Bus.

"The initiative is a wonderful opportunity for many local older people to get or stay connected with others, and our team look forward to chatting with people and helping them link into their community.

"It's fantastic to see age-friendly initiatives like this and we are keen to support and encourage other events that are inclusive and help older people make connections."

Jess Willsher, CEO of Oxfordshire Mind, added: "We’re thrilled to partner with Oxford Bus Group and Age UK Oxfordshire for the Chatty Bus event.

"At Oxfordshire Mind, we understand the profound impact that loneliness and isolation can have on mental health.

"This initiative provides a wonderful opportunity for people to connect, share stories, and build relationships in a welcoming and supportive environment.

"We encourage everyone to come aboard the 280 bus on August 6."
