Householders in Botley were stopped in their tracks after a loud "unusual" sound was heard from the sky this morning (July 25).

One resident said the noise, which was heard at approximately 8.30am, lasted for five minutes.

Daniel Venego, who lives in Botley, posted on X this morning: "There was a very loud sound in west Oxford around 8.25/30 this morning - which lasted for five minutes.

"It was possibly a low airplane but that sound was definitely unusual."

Mr Venego told the Oxford Mail: "I have lived in west Oxford since 2015 and this is the first time I've heard something like that.

"It wasn’t just a low airplane, it felt like something from the RAF but we weren’t able to see anything.

"People got out of their houses to check if there was something up in the air but we didn’t see anything.

"I have a young daughter and she was woken up crying by that sound."

Another householder, who lives in North Hinksey Lane and did not wish to be named, told the Oxford Mail: "I had to rush over to the window to see what the sound was but I couldn't see anything in the sky.

"It sounded like an aircraft but it wasn't your typical sound of a plane going overhead.

"It was almost like a rumbling which went on for quite a while.

"I saw one man stop his car and get out in the road to have a good look at the sky.

"It must have stopped a lot of people in their tracks."

It is understood the sound came from two RAF jets heading to Brize Norton.
