Oxford University students used their graduation ceremony to protest against the war in Gaza.

Two ceremonies took place at the Sheldonian Theatre in Broad Street today (Tuesday, July 23).

As students approached the middle of the floor to accept their degree, they unfurled Palestinian flags and banners from their gowns.

Pro-Palestine protestors also handed out flyers outside the theatre designed to look like graduation pamphlets detailing "Oxford's funding of the Israeli occupation".

The university has seen a range of pro-Palestine protests in recent months.

Student activist group Oxford Action 4 Palestine (OA4P) set up a Gaza Solidarity Encampment at the Radcliffe Camera which was closed down by the university on July 8.

An encampment outside the Pitt Rivers Museum which was set up on May 6 was dismantled on June 23.

Students in academic dress soaked in fake blood also staged a die-in at the Sheldonian and occupied the Examination Schools during end of year exams.

Demonstrators also barricaded themselves in vice chancellor Irene Tracey's office.

Sara Pelham, graduating with a BA in English and modern languages, said: "I was part of our Gaza solidarity encampment for the last three months, and instead of ending its support of Israel's genocide, Oxford threatened legal action against its own students.

"I have no pride in graduating from a university that funds the murder of over 186,000 Palestinians especially after the International Court of Justice decision this week, it's clear the international community has a legal obligation to immediately stop supporting Israel."
