Plans are set to be given the green light which will help facilitate the progress of 115 new homes being built near an Oxfordshire town.

Vale of White District councillors will discuss a reserved matters application on Thursday evening to build on land at Crab Hill north of the A417 and east of the A338 on the edge of Wantage.

Outline planning application has already been granted for 669 homes at the Crab Hill site but details around design for different phases of the development are yet to be approved.

The plans are part of the 1,500 home Kingsgrove development which was approved in 2015.

Wantage Town Council has objected to the development due to concerns around some houses "dominating the existing properties" and a potential loss of visitor parking.

This comes as the council had previously raised concerns about the development as a whole saying "the increase of units will impact on local amenities, infrastructure, green spaces and car parking that is required to provide a quality development.”

But in response to the reserved matters application, a council officer said: "The proposed development is acceptable.

"The design of all the external elements of the proposal is considered to make a positive contribution to its appearance, with attractive design, form, and scale, together with the proposed materials, landscape treatment and the relationship of the buildings within their environment."

A majority of buildings under the proposal would be two-storeys high though the plans also include three-storey flats.

North entrances to the development would present a "contemporary approach, in line with the character of the area", the applicant St Modwen Homes has said.

The developer also stated areas of the site would be drawn together "with a shared palette of materials including two types of buff brick and one type of red brick".

The site is divided into three parcels to the north east of Wantage and to the west of recently approved new developments which include a primary school, adjacent to the eastern frontage.

On the northern frontage lies the Central Park which includes play areas and a sports pavilion.

An applicant planning paper said: "Crab Hill is taking shape as a high-quality, sustainable, mixed-use development.

"It will also provide new services and facilities, including a newly constructed primary school, a neighbourhood centre, and extensive areas of formal and informal open space that will benefit those living at Crab Hill and the wider community."

The development contains a mixture of "affordable" and market housing.
