Oxford Science Enterprises (OSE), an investment company in partnership with the University of Oxford, announced that Samsung Electronics had agreed to buy a Deep Tech company in OSE's portfolio.

Oxford Semantic Technologies, the creators of the knowledge graph software RDFox®, support AI applications that need precise accuracy.

Samsung aims to use the software in an array of products, including mobile devices, televisions, and home appliances.

The pairing of RDFox® with Samsung's on-device AI technology could enable hyper-personalised user experiences and ensure data security on devices.

The founders of Oxford Semantic Technologies, Professors Ian Horrocks, Boris Motik and Bernardo Cuenca Grau from the Computer Science Department at Oxford University, received their first investment from OSE in March 2017.

The company's technology transforms large, multi-source data into a unified high-performance database, aiding automatic materialisation of new knowledge based on subject expertise.

This technology gives organisations the ability to transform their data into machine-readable knowledge.

Significantly, Oxford Semantic Technologies began collaborating with Samsung Research on various projects back in 2018, before the acquisition.

The success of Oxford Semantic Technologies underlines the potential within Oxford University to convert top-tier academic research into thriving science and technology firms.

Other successes include Deep Tech company Latent Logic and biotech firms MiroBio and DJS Antibodies, all purchased from the OSE portfolio.

Sam Harman, principal and acting head of deep tech at OSE said: "This is great news for Oxford Semantic Technologies and Samsung. The company’s ground-breaking technology can play a big role in the advancement of AI across the suite of Samsung’s products.

"We’re proud to have worked with Oxford Semantic Technologies since the very beginning, helping them to turn their brilliant research in an Oxford laboratory into technology that will be integrated into products that will be used in homes around the world."

Peter Crocker, CEO of Oxford Semantic Technologies said: "We are delighted to be working with Samsung. By integrating Samsung’s expertise in user experience and data with our advanced knowledge graph and reasoning technology, we will provide Samsung’s customers with even more sophisticated personalisation.

"We are grateful for our partnership with Oxford Science Enterprises. In addition to their important financial investment, they have been a critical source of knowledge and support in turning our academic research into a commercial product."
