The reopening of a main road in an Oxfordshire town has been brought forward after emergency gas works have taken place.

Long delays have taken place in Henley during rush hours due to the closure of Hart Street for 24-hour works.

The road was closed on Monday, July 15 and was expected to reopen on Monday, July 22.

However, British gas company SGN now expects the road to reopen tomorrow (Thursday, July 18) following the completion of the repairs.

A spokesperson for SGN said: “We’ve completed emergency repairs to our gas network in Hart Street, Henley.

“Due to the position of our gas main and to ensure everyone’s safety, Hart Street remains closed between Duke Street and Thameside.

“The road was closed immediately on Monday following the detection of the leak. A signed diversion is in place for motorists.

“We now need to restore the road surface to the required specifications before we can reopen the road.

“This process takes time in between processes for layers of the new road surface to harden.

“All going well, Hart Street will be reopened as normal by Thursday (July 18) morning, though our team will remain on-site to replace a gas service to a property.

“We’d like to thank Henley residents, businesses and motorists for your patience and support.”
