Fans across Oxford are preparing to cheer on England as they look to create history in the Euro 2024 final.

England will meet Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday (July 14) in Berlin following their dramatic 2-1 victory over the Netherlands.

Ollie Watkins scored a dramatic last-gasp winner in Dortmund on Wednesday (July 10) to send England’s men to a first major final on foreign soil.

Pubs across the county are preparing for huge crowds to cheer on Gareth Southgate’s side to their first European championship.

A lot of pubs have already been fully booked out with the Wig & Pen on George Street admitting their system crashed due to an influx of fans looking to get a table.

Assistant manager at the Wig & Pen, Kane Falter said: “We are expecting it to be really busy.

“It is a nice surprise that we have got this far. I’m not sure anyone was expecting it to be honest.

“We are gearing up for a really big day. We are already fully booked out and we have had to reject loads of enquiries.

“We were already quite booked up before Wednesday’s semi-final and then the booking system crashed after England won and by that point the timeslots were booked by the end of the night.”

Zac Knowles, an Oxford United fan from Woodstock, has been out to Germany several times already for the tournament and was there for the Three Lions’ semi-final win.

He is now set to travel to Berlin this morning after securing tickets for the final.

Mr Knowles: “I have been out a couple of times this tournament. I came back on Thursday (July 11) and I am going back out this morning (Saturday, July 13) for the final.

“I am buzzing for the final. It will be fantastic.

“It is going to be a tough game but anything can happen on the day. I think we will do it this time.

“The way the tournament has been with last-minute goals, it’s almost written in the stars that it is going to happen.”

He described the semi-final win in Dortmund as “one of the best atmospheres” he has experienced at a football match.

He said: “I have watched football in 25 countries and been to over 130 grounds, but that was one of the best nights I have ever witnessed at a football game.

“I don’t think I have ever celebrated a goal like that before.

“It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this. It’s the first tournament final that isn’t in England, that’s all you need to know

Another Oxford United fan who has been out to Germany, Bertie Wright, said: “We went out for one game, stayed two nights and had a great time.

“England have grown into the tournament and I’m looking forward to a 2-0 win in the final.”

Other Yellows fans Lee Wanless and Arron Robinson also travelled to Germany with their U’s flag.

Mr Wanless, chairman of the private members club Ashton Club in Bicester, said: “The semi-final was great. It’s going to be a very tight game on Sunday but hopefully England will come out on top.”
