An historic Oxfordshire hotel run by PR supremo Matthew Freud has picked up a national award.

The Bull Burford has won the ‘boutique stay’ category in Muddy Stilettos hosts annual awards.

Boasting 18 rooms, the Grade-II listed 15th-century inn also has four different restaurants for guests to dine at.

Mr Freud, who lives in Burford Priory, bought The Bull Hotel and the adjoining former Burford News when they came up for sale in 2020.

The former coaching inn counts Lord Nelson, Lady Hamilton, King Charles II and his mistress Nell Gwynne among its previous VIP guests.

The hotel in Burford's High Street picked up the award after a judging panel whittled down nominations across 28 counties.

Its review of the hotel reads: “Urbanites front left and centre – I can imagine a steady trail of stressed Londoners coming to uncurl in style.

“Foodies will be in heaven. And it’s a fabulous option for couples wanting a grown-up luxe experience without the bonkers price tag of other chichi Cotswolds options.

“There’s an inventive events schedule, from ceramics making and foraging to film nights, that adds a seductive experiential element.”

The Milk Shed in Weston-on-the Green was named a runner-up in the ‘café’ category.

While Tigers ‘n’ Tiaras in Henley made the ‘children businesses’ finalist list.
