The England flag is flying high above Oxford as Gareth Southgate’s side secured their place in the Euro 2024 final.

England sealed a dramatic 2-1 win over the Netherlands with an injury-time goal by Ollie Watkins last night (Wednesday, July 10) to reach their first major tournament final on foreign soil.

They will now face Spain at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Sunday evening (July 14).

Oxford City Council is flying the England flag at Carfax Tower and the 1930s extension to Oxford Town Hall until at least the end of the competition.

Leader of Oxford City Council Susan Brown said: “The England team never make it easy for us supporters, but what a way to reach the final of Euro 2024.

"Congratulations, England, and the best of luck for Sunday.

“We’re celebrating the team’s achievement by flying the England flag at Carfax Tower and the 1930s Town Hall extension until at least the end of the tournament.

"Here’s hoping we can keep it flying on Monday.”

Cherwell District Council has also congratulated the England team with a tongue-in-cheek letter.

The letter reads: “Congratulations on reaching the Euros 2024 final. You've scored your way into the hearts of millions, and we couldn't be prouder.

“Here in Cherwell, we like to think we know a thing or two about building success and planning for greatness. So, from our council to your squad, here's a heartfelt (and cheeky) letter of support.

“Just like constructing strong communities, where teamwork is essential, we know you'll be laying the foundations to win the trophy. Remember, every victory is built goal-by-goal.

"Much like our own plans to revamp Cherwell's towns, each strategic pass you make is similar to our regeneration process, where every decision contributes to a more successful future, something our Banbury Vision 2050 and Bicester Market Place teams can tell you all about.

“If you encounter any rubbish on the field (we're looking at you, ref), just recycle it into a positive outcome, like that penalty in the semi-final, you struck lucky Kane.

“Whether you're at the Olympiastadion or Wembley, home is where the heart is - all of Cherwell is behind you.

“Bring it home lads, our recycling bins are ready for the confetti. Yours expectantly, Cherwell District Council.”

A peak of 21.6 million tuned into ITV1 and ITVX to watch the match on Wednesday evening which saw Ollie Watkins net a 90th-minute goal, firing the Three Lions into the final.
