England fans in Oxfordshire and across the country celebrated as Gareth Southgate’s side reached the Euro 2024 final.

A late goal from Ollie Watkins sent fans into bedlam as England claimed a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands on Wednesday.

The substitute claimed the last-gasp winner after a penalty from captain Harry Kane penalty cancelled out Xavi Simons’ early opener for the Dutch.

An impressive Spain side stands in their way and England will have to be at their absolute best against them if they are to join the 1966 World Cup team in immortality.

Support from across the county is already gathering momentum as pupils at St Nicolas School in Abingdon recreated the Three Lions song to include moments from England’s route to the final this week.

Headteacher Andrew Spooner rewrote the song and the primary school sang the tune in their assembly.

The school produced a similar song three years ago when England made the final in the last European championships.

He said: “As a way of celebrating England making the Euro 2024 final I decided to rewrite the ‘Three Lions’ song to reflect this year's tournament.

“It’s something we did in 2021 and the children absolutely loved it.

“It’s just a fun, engaging way to celebrate the successes of our national football team.”

Oxford West and Abingdon MP Layla Moran watched the game with her fellow Liberal Democrats MPs as England progressed to the final.

She said: “What happens when we get 72 MPs for the first time in a room? We watch football. C’mon England!”

And there have been calls from the Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey for a one-off bank holiday if England brings home the European championship.

He said: “The Three Lions are playing their first ever final on foreign soil, and if they bring it home, the Government should bring home a bank holiday to celebrate.

“England deserves the chance to celebrate a once-in-a-generation event.

“Who knows, we might even get decent weather.”

The new Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer has said the UK should “certainly mark the occasion” if England wins Euro 2024.

He appeared to suggest he would not commit to an extra day off as he said did not want to “jinx anything” by pre-empting the result of Sunday’s final between Gareth Southgate’s team and Spain.

Sir Keir previously supported calls for a bank holiday when England’s women’s football team made it to the World Cup final last year.

Asked whether he would back a bank holiday if Southgate’s team is victorious, the Prime Minister told broadcasters in Washington DC: “We should certainly mark the occasion, I don’t want to jinx it. I went to the last Euros final, I don’t want to go through that again.

“I don’t want to jinx anything but we must mark it in some way. But the most important thing is getting it over the line on Sunday.”
