Pupils at an Oxfordshire primary school have sung in support of England ahead of their Euro 2024 final against Spain.

Andrew Spooner, headteacher at the St Nicolas School in Abingdon, rewrote the popular Three Lions song to include moments from England’s route to the final.

The school did a similar thing three years ago when England made the final in the last European championships.

Assembled in the school’s hall, Mr Spooner played the guitar as his pupils belted out the lyrics to the song in support of Gareth Southgate’s side.

He said: “As a way of celebrating England making the Euro 2024 final I decided to rewrite the ‘Three Lions’ song to reflect this year's tournament.

“It’s something we did in 2021 and the children absolutely loved it.

“It’s just a fun, engaging way to celebrate the successes of our national football team.”

Ollie Watkins struck at the death to send England to their second successive European Championship final as Southgate’s side dug deep to see off the Netherlands.

The eyes of the nation were fixed on Dortmund on Wednesday evening as the Euro 2020 runners-up looked to seal a shot at history in Sunday’s Berlin showpiece against favourites Spain.

Harry Kane’s spot-kick cancelled out a superb Xavi Simons opener before Watkins stepped off the bench and wrote his name into the history books by sealing a 2-1 triumph in the 90th minute.

No English men’s team has made it to a major final on foreign soil before and now they have the chance to become European champions for the first time this weekend.
