An Oxford city centre bar is now serving levitating cocktails as part of a new menu.

The Alchemist can be found on the upper level of the city’s Westgate shopping centre after opening in October 2017.

I was lucky enough to go along to the bar and try out some of the cocktails and the food from the new menu.

My partner Jordyn and I started the meal with some of The Alchemist’s newest offerings in terms of drinks.

Aptly named ‘The Levitating One’, Jordyn’s choice of drink quite literally floated after it was brought to the table.

Using a clever contraption which appeared to use magnetism, the glass levitated above the box with which it was served.

The drink comprised Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Regal Rogue Wild Rose and Bold Red Vermouth, Akashi Plum Sake and Muyu Vetiver.

Part of The Alchemist’s new Next Level Serves range, ‘The Levitating One’ comes in at £22 due to its high spirit level and anti-gravity tricks.

I opted for a less extravagant, but equally flavoursome option in the ‘Basil Smash’, which consisted of Martin Miller's Gin, basil, peach and lime.

The drink was served with a crystallised sugar topper that I had to, as the name suggests, smash through in order to access the beverage.

This option is part of The Alchemist’s Light and Dreamy range and sets you back £11 but its unique taste makes it worth it.

Moving onto the food and Jordyn opted for Pulled Beef on Brioche whereas I went for the Jalapeno and Parmesan Donut.

We swapped and shared, concluding that both plates were equally as good as each other, but the former was slightly lighter and more preferable at lunchtime.

The Jalapeno and Parmesan Donut was made from house dough with smashed pretzel and bacon bits alongside cheese fondue and cost £6.

The Pulled Beef on Brioche was slightly more coming in at £9 and was comprised of caramelised shredded beef, toasted brioche, parmesan, chilli oil and chives.

There were still main meals to come though as it quickly became the toughest decision of the day with so much to pick from.

After careful consideration, I opted to choose the Black Angus Rump Steak while Jordyn picked the BBQ Pork Fajitas.

My dish was served with a teriyaki glaze and chimichurri sauce while Jordyn’s was served sizzling with coleslaw, guacamole, sour cream, cheese, grilled peppers and onions.

Costing £20.50 and £17.75 respectively, both meals were immensely filling and bursting with an array of flavours.

All in all, it was a brilliant outing and I thoroughly recommend the venue for dinner or the starters for a light lunch with cocktails.
