A man from Oxford has been banned from attending any football match for five years after he was found in possession of drugs at a Shrewsbury Town FC match.

Aiden Murray, of Bulan Road, Headington in Oxford pleaded guilty in April 2024 to a charge of possession of class A drugs.

The court heard how Murray was found in possession of the drug at a match between Shrewsbury Town FC and Oxford United in March 2024.

The 21-year-old was given the five year football banning order on Monday (July 8) at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court, which means he cannot attend any football match in the UK.

The order also means that Murray will be unable to travel abroad when England play internationally during that period.

PC Chris Rayment, the force’s dedicated football officer for Shrewsbury Town FC, said: “This is a great example of proactive partnership working between stewards and police on match days and sends out a clear message to football fans that drugs will not be tolerated within football.

“Football is enjoyed by people from all ages and backgrounds, including young children. Being in possession or using illegal substances or prohibited items can have a negative effect on people’s behaviour, impacting the safety and enjoyment of others.

“We will continue to work closely with Shrewsbury Town Football Club as we plan and prepare for next season, to ensure that matches are safe and enjoyable for all.”

The investigation was supported by Thames Valley Police's dedicated football officers.

Under the new legislation, fans who commit class A drug offences at matches can now face being banned for up to 10-years, and could even see them receive a criminal conviction.
