Shoppers took to social media on Thursday morning to vent their frustration, and warn others off making the same mistake.

One shopper, posting on X (formerly Twitter), said: "Just did a whole shop in @asda got to the till and told card payments aren’t working across supermarkets/shops in the UK.

"Does anything work in this country?"

Another person commented: "Shopping in Sainsbury's and only when you get to the till they tell you that they cannot take cards and the cash machine is down."

While a third person commented: "@AsdaServiceTeam Disgusted at your cribs causeway store!, just spent ages filling a trolley to then be told it’s cash only!! ,no mobile or cards.

"Should have told me before I entered!, I’ll be using Morrisons from now on."

There was also a photo posted on X of a sign in a Sainsbury's store telling customers they were accepting "cash only" and they were "currently unable to take payments" from:

  • Argos Card

Both Asda and Sainsbury's were aware of the issues, replying to posts on X apologising to customers for the inconvenience caused.

A Sainsbury's spokesperson on X commented: "I'm sorry about the card payment issue in store.

"We've been advised the issue has now been resolved. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused."

"I apologise for any inconvenience this has caused."

Asda has since confirmed, according to Sky News, its payment systems are back up and running following temporary issues with Visa.
