Oxfordshire customers have reported experiencing major issues at Sainsbury’s supermarkets and other major retailers.

Shoppers at the Heyford Hill store in Littlemore on the edge of Oxford relayed on Thursday morning that staff were only taking cash for purchases.

This is due to an apparent issue with the supermarket’s card machines which is reportedly affecting other stores in the county as a result of issues with a third-party payment provider.

Witney’s Sainsbury’s is also experiencing the same issue while the post office machines are also down.

The issue seems to be part of a wider problem affecting businesses in the UK today as fellow supermarket chain Asda and fast food brand McDonald’s have been experiencing issues.

Hundreds of issues with Visa and Mastercard have also been reported on DownDetector.

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "I'm sorry about the card payment issue in store.

"We've been made aware there was a nationwide issue with card payments earlier today.

"We've been advised the issue has now been resolved. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused."

While an Asda spokesperson added: "We are aware of the issue that is going on and we are working hard to get this fixed as soon as possible.

"I apologise for any inconvenience this has caused."

Asda has since confirmed, according to Sky News, its payment systems are back up and running following temporary issues with Visa.
