An open air pool in Abingdon has now been landscaped and is set to be ready to open later this month.

Residents in the town have been disappointed that the town's outdoor pool at Abbey Meadows has remained closed during a period of hot weather.

The neighbouring splash pad and fountains have now been switched on, but the pool is not scheduled to open until July 20.

For the second year running, the outdoor pool is opening in late July and closing for the season in early September.

There were also concerns from residents that vegetation around the pool had been left to grow, but it has now been cut back.

(Image: Andy Ffrench) Council staff were cutting the grass outside the pool this week, although it is understood that this year they were not responsible for the maintenance work with the vegetation inside the pool.

A member of staff at the pool site said: "We're working hard to get the pool ready."

Sue Caul, Vale of White Horse Cabinet member for leisure facilities, said: “Everything is on schedule ready for the big public opening on 20 July. There has been a lot going on behind the scenes over the last six weeks to get the site ship shape and ready to go!

“It’s always great to see how much enjoyment children and families get from the pool at Abbey Meadow. Combined with the splash pad and the kiosk, we’re proud that we can provide local residents with such a fantastic way to spend their summer holidays.”

Bosses at the Vale of White Horse District Council said earlier the pool was expensive to run.

But they have pledged to look at ways to keep the pool open for longer in future.

Hinksey outdoor pool in Oxford opened in April, and said there were 80 people there at 6am to celebrate the summer solstice.
