Staff at an opticians in Abingdon have collectively walked more than 700 miles in a month in support of a carers charity.

The team from Specsavers raised £370 in May, National Walking Month, for the store’s chosen charity, Be Free Young Carers.

Twenty-one members counted just the steps they took on walks, rather than general steps throughout the day, using the Strava app to record them.

Specsavers Abingdon store director, Andrew Threlfall, said: "We were keen to challenge ourselves in a bid to raise funds for Be Free Young Carers, supporting them with the work they do for young carers and their families across Oxfordshire.

"Not only did we feel the positive benefits from walking additional steps, but we really felt the community’s support in our efforts to rack up the miles in May and we want to say a big thank you to everyone that donated.

"Keep an eye out because we will be doing more fundraising for Be Free Young Carers throughout the rest of the year."

The charity assists young carers aged eight to 17, and their families.

It works to provide these children with opportunities to relax, make friends, and enjoy time away from their caregiving responsibilities.

It is the only independent charity in Oxfordshire working exclusively with young carers and has been operating for more than 28 years across Southern Oxfordshire.
