Lord David Cameron has resigned from his role as foreign secretary following the General Election last week.

Last week's election saw the Conservatives lose the former Prime Minister's seat in Witney to the Liberal Democrats.

Lord Cameron was MP for Witney and West Oxfordshire from 2001 to 2016.

In the General Election last week, sitting MP Robert Courts lost his seat to Charlie Maynard who was elected with 20,832 votes, beating Mr Courts' 16,493 votes.

Ex-Prime Minister Lord Cameron, who lives in Dean near Witney, had made a surprise return to cabinet in November.

He has been replaced by his former deputy Andrew Mitchell as shadow foreign secretary.

Rishi Sunak will remain the leader of the Conservatives’ interim shadow cabinet.

Lord Cameron said he will "continue to support the party" despite resigning from his role.

Posting a statement after his resignation from the shadow cabinet was announced, Lord David Cameron said: “It’s been a huge honour to serve as foreign secretary, but clearly the Conservative Party in opposition will need to shadow the new Foreign Secretary from the Commons.

“So I told Rishi Sunak that I would step back.

"I’m delighted that the shadow foreign secretary role has gone to my good friend Andrew Mitchell.

“As a committed Conservative, I will continue to support the party and help where I can as we rebuild from the very disappointing election result.”
