Private gardens in Oxfordshire will be open to visitors this summer for a charity fundraiser.

The National Garden Scheme provides access to more than 3,500 private gardens across the country.

This initiative, which has been running for 40 years, has already raised £19 million for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The funds have helped to pay for more than 150 Macmillan nurses and other staff.

The money raised since 1984 has also funded care units in Bristol and Chesterfield.

Most gardens welcome children under 16 for free, while some offer activities for families along with tea and cake.

The charity said: "Why not inspire your little adventurers to learn about nature and support Macmillan this summer with a visit to a National Garden Scheme garden."
