A motorway multi-vehicle crash has led to long queues of traffic on Sunday evening. 

The collision took place on the M40 southbound near Lewknor and was first reported to the AA just before 8pm. 

Two lanes were closed on the motorway from Junction Six to Junction Seven between Milton Common and Lewknor.

There was approximately 2.5 miles of congestion on approach, causing delays of 45 minutes above usual journey times around 9pm.

The crash caused disruption for those travelling after the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Traffic was temporarily stopped at around 9.30pm while crews worked to clear the scene. 

National Highways stated at 10pm that traffic had been released. 

A statement said: "Traffic has been released on the M40 southbound between J7 Milton Common and J6 Lewknor following an earlier traffic collision.

"Lanes two and three remain closed. Thank you for your patience whilst the emergency services dealt with the incident."

All lanes were opened at around 10.45pm but there remains residual delays of 50 minutes and approximately three miles of congestion.

Traffic was reported to be slow moving on the M40 eastbound near Testworth following the crash with an average speed of 15mph at 9pm. 

There were also delays on the A40 eastbound between Box Tree Lane and Chinnor Road at around 8.30pm near Lewknor.

The crash has come after further disruption on the M40 on Sunday afternoon.

There were heavy delays following reports of the motorway being blocked near High Wycombe in the southbound carriageway from around 4pm due to a traffic incident.
