A running event in support of a "superhuman" brain tumour survivor and former semi-professional footballer took place at the weekend.

The event was organised in support of Tom Mayor, 34, a former Northampton Town goalkeeper who was diagnosed with a pituitary brain tumour 10 years ago.

The cancer is thought to have triggered a growth hormone disorder in 6ft 6 inch tall Mr Mayor.

It has left him with numerous complications including incessant headaches and a loss of his peripheral vision.

Marking a decade since his diagnosis, dubbed his "tumourversary", Mr Mayor has been involved in a fundraiser for Brain Tumour Research.

He is running, cycling, or swimming 10km daily for 10 months to raise funds for research into a disease that takes more lives under the age of 40 than any other cancer.

Answering Mr Mayor's call for support, Run Wallingford and Wallingford Triathlon Club joined forces for an endurance event in South Stoke on July 7.

The challenge saw participants running 5km laps around the village, with the aim of completing one lap each hour within a 12-hour-period, with the last man or woman standing crowned the winner.

Event organiser Andrew Harden-Sweetnam, a committee member for the triathlon club, said: "What Tom is doing now is superhuman.

“When he told me he had a tumour I was stunned – I had no idea. His mental resilience is incredible.

"What I’ve learned from Tom is that brain cancer isn’t always a death sentence. The way he continues to keep fighting is a true inspiration.

“He is now known to us all as 10k a day Tom.

"Hosting the backyard ultra is the least we could do to support him and the charity."

Mr Mayor, who was absent during the event due to his honeymoon, has been praised for his determination to keep fundraising.

Despite falling ill after swimming in the Thames for a triathlon, he still managed to complete his 10k daily target.

He is also edging closer to reaching his target of raising £2,740, the cost of running one of Brain Tumour Research’s Centres of Excellence for a full day.

Brain Tumour Research funds sustainable research and campaigns for the government and larger cancer charities to invest more in research into brain tumours.

The charity is the driving force behind the call for a national annual spend of £35 million in order to improve survival rates and patient outcomes in line with other cancers such as breast cancer and leukaemia.
