A car which won a London to Mexico rally held to mark the 1970 World Cup will go on display in Bicester next week.

The Ford Escort 1850 GT, also known as 'FEV 1H', will lead the displays at the Euros Assembly at Bicester Heritage on July 14.

FEV 1H captured the public's imagination when it emerged as the quickest vehicle to travel from Wembley Stadium, the host of the 1966 World Cup final, to Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, the host of the 1970 World Cup final.

The car now forms part of the Ford Heritage Vault at Daventry and will be showcased at the member-exclusive event in Bicester.

Future World Rally Championship winner, Hannu Mikkola, alongside co-driver Gunnar Palm, drove the car to victory in the event 54 years ago.

This achievement inspired possibly the most sought-after model among all Escorts - the Mexico, which was launched in October of the same year.

In a testing journey covering more than 16,000 miles over a six-week period, the Ford emerged victorious ahead of Brian Culcheth and Johnstone Syer's Triumph 2.5 PI by incurring fewer penalties.

Mr Mikkola's Ford teammate, Rauno Aaltonen, and Henry Liddon, finished in third place.

Tickets are exclusively available to Pegasus members from the shop Bicester Heritage, with Pegasus members admitted free of charge.

Members are encouraged to register their attendance in advance.
