A new café has been launched in Witney with the aim of reducing loneliness and isolation among older people.

The companionship café is funded by national charity Home Instead Charities, whose work is centred around preventing isolation in ageing adults. It has partnered with Home Instead Oxford to establish the café.

Home Instead UK is unique in having a national charitable arm which has already opened a number of companionship cafés in communities across the country.

Executive director of Home Instead Charities, Penny Hamer, said, "We are privileged to be the charitable arm of an organization with over 255 office locations, all of which passionately support our charity and align with our mission.

"It's exciting to now partner with the Oxford team to connect with the local community.

"The feedback from the cafes already up and running has been outstanding – they are lively spaces that bring joy to many. What more could we ask for?"

Home Instead Oxford supports older people in their own homes and understands the importance of avoiding isolation as it can take a toll on physical and mental health.

The team was, therefore, delighted to work with the charity to create a welcoming space for people to meet, enjoy a drink and share conversation.

Volunteers from the care company run the café each month.

Home Instead Oxford plans to invite guests who can offer advice and insight on prevalent challenges faced by older people.

The volunteers themselves, some of whom are care professionals, will provide advice regarding care options.

The café will be held on the second Wednesday of each, from 10am to midday, at Witney Methodist Church.

The events are free and open to the public, with the next one scheduled for July 10.

Beverley Wright, community engagement officer at Home Instead Oxford, said: "Old age should be a positive and fulfilling time, yet many in this age group face a widespread loneliness epidemic. It's time we addressed this issue.

"Whether you want to bring your mother for advice on managing her dementia or seek information about local community groups, our team is here to assist.

"Just as importantly, we're eager for you to meet others, forge connections, and unleash your creativity."

Home Instead provides a range of care, including personal care such as help with dressing and bathing, companionship, and specialist dementia care.

It supports people with a range of home care as well as offering live-in carers.

Its care professionals are matched to clients based on similar interests, enabling a meaningful relationship to develop between the two.
