Actor and comedian Steve Coogan has endorsed the Liberal Democrats proposals for fighting sewage pollution in Witney.

The 'I'm Alan Patridge' creator posted on X, formerly Twitter: "I'm urging you people of Witney to vote for Charlie Maynard Liberal Democrat.

"So if I’m normally a Labour supporter and if you’re a Green or inclined to vote Labour, in Witney very important to vote for Charlie Maynard.

"He’s done a lot to fight water pollution by the nefarious privatised utility companies."

Mr Coogan, who is normally a Labour supporter, shot the video at Lake Windermere where he has criticised United Utilities for putting sewage into the lake.

He joined a protest outside the north west water company’s offices near the lake last April 2023 calling for them to clean up England’s largest lake rather than pay big dividends to shareholders.

United Utilities responded that it has spent £75million improving wastewater services around Windermere, which had halved the levels of phosphorus, as part of a proposed £14billion investment to improve water and wastewater services across the north west between 2025 and 2030.

The Conservatives, Labour and the Greens have also pledged to tackle Thames Water's sewage pollution of Witney's waterways if elected.

The candidates for Witney are: Robert Courts, Con; Antonio Weiss, Labour; Andrew Prosser, Green; Richard Langridge, Reform UK; Barry Ingleton, Independent; David Cox, Heritage Party.
