SOLDIERS, cadets, veterans and members of the public came together to show their support for the armed forces, as the county prepares to celebrate Armed Forces Day this Saturday.

A day of free family activities took place in Woodstock in an early celebration last Saturday with military attractions and Second World War vehicles on display in the town’s Market Square.

Activities ran throughout the day with an Armed Forces Day Garden Party at the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum in the town, including a session making model Horsa gliders – such as those used at Pegasus Bridge at the start of D-Day and in Operation Market Garden at Arnhem.

There was also performance in the museum garden by The Waterloo Band and Bugles of the Rifles.

The Coldstream Guards were on hand to demonstrate military kit.

The event included free admission to visit the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum’s 10-year anniversary showcase.

The exhibition celebrates all those who have contributed to setting up the first military museum in the county.

Retired Lt Col Ingram Murray, father of ‘Pub Landlord’ comedian Al Murray, showed visitors a display showing the inside of a Horsa glider.

Lt Col Murray, who served in the Parachute Squadron of the Royal Engineers, is a volunteer at the museum and has been a keen supporter.
