Politicians have congratulated a Liberal Democrat candidate on his political win following a snap by-election in south Oxfordshire.

The new councillor for the Sutton Courtenay and Marcham county council seat, Peter Stevens, was elected yesterday (June 21) after results were announced in the Vale of White Horse area.

This comes as Mr Stevens' Liberal Democrat predecessor, Richard Webber, resigned in May due to "health reasons".

A notice of vacancy was posted online in response to Mr Webber's resignation before Mr Stevens won the vote to succeed him.

Party colleagues have taken to social media to congratulate Mr Stevens, who is also a district councillor for Sutton Courtenay, on his win.

Councillor Neil Fawcett, a county councillor for the Abingdon South division and district councillor for the Abingdon Caldecott ward, was among those congratulating Mr Stevens publicly following the result being announced.

The Green candidate secured 20 per cent (375) and the Labour candidate secured 10 per cent (183).

Mr Stevens will hold the position for the remainder of the council term, until the next local government elections.

Another by-election is scheduled to take place for Oxford City Council's Marston ward on July 18 after Green councillor Alistair Morris resigned this month due to health reasons.
