Five students from an Oxford school have represented Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire in the finals of the National Reading Championship Quiz.

The competition, organised by the National Literacy Trust, tests students on their book knowledge.

The Oxford Spires Academy students, Seth, Nathan, Kitty, Martha, and Angus came joint fourth in the competition that was held in London.

After winning the regional heat in March, the team took on 21 other schools from across the UK in the final.

Even though the final presented tougher questions than the heats, the Oxford Spires team scored almost full marks in two rounds in the second half.

They were beaten only by a school rated "outstanding" by Ofsted, a selective grammar school and a private school.

Headteacher at Oxford Spires, Louise Cowley, said: "This was a hard quiz and our students rose to the occasion, representing both Oxford Spires and our county admirably, fully deserving of the trophy they received for winning their regional heat.

"Reading and literacy are the foundation of the education we offer at the school and we are very proud to see our students taking part in competitions like this, which help develop their personal voice and their confidence."

The team said they will enjoy being the joint fourth best in the country for literacy knowledge and go back next year with the aim of winning the top prize.
