A decision will soon be made on whether to grant permission for a new Tesco Express supermarket on a city road by a major housing development.

Oxford city councillors are set to make the final decision on the application at a licensing meeting on Monday, June 17 for proposed store in Barton Fields Road in Headington.

The licence will allow the sale of alcohol for consumption off the premises Sunday to Saturday from 6am to midnight and late night refreshment Sunday to Saturday between 11pm and midnight.

Work at Barton Park started in 2015.

Developer Hill's Mosaic project was the first part to be built in the west of the site and its 237 homes, including 95 let at social rent, were completed in 2020.

Phase two The Steeples by Redrow, which includes Barton Primary School, in the east has 120 homes and is expected to finish in 2025.

The last and biggest section in the centre is called Beckley Place and is made up of 424 homes of which 176 will be sold to Oxford City Council for social housing.

This section also contains 6,200 sq ft of retail space.

Some objections have been raised to the application in relation to the licensing conditions which will be considered at Monday's meeting.

One objector, Harmit Ghattaura, said: "In an area where we have had a fair bit of anti-social behaviour, scooters riding through the park, speeding traffic, individuals hanging about the area who do not reside here - your proposal for a Tesco Express serving alcohol until midnight will be a disaster."
