A central convenience store used by students in Oxford has been slammed by hygiene inspectors.

Uni Food and Wine in Park End Street in the city centre sells a variety of groceries and alcohol with the store’s central location attracting tourists and students alike.

The store was visited by Oxford City Council’s Environmental Health team on Thursday, May 2, and was handed a one-out-of-five hygiene score.

Inspectors stated that 'major improvement [was] necessary' at the site, outlining failings in two key areas.

The cleanliness and condition of both the facilities and the building were highlighted as a problem with ‘necessary’ improvement being requested by the hygiene report.

This includes having an appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene.

Inspectors pinpointed Uni Food and Wine’s management of food safety as the major issue at the site stating that ‘major improvement’ was needed.

This refers to having a system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat.

It also concerns whether there is evidence that staff know about food safety and if the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

The store's hygienic food handling, which includes preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage, was rated as ‘good’.

Uni Food and Wine has been approached for comment by the Oxford Mail.
