Residents at a care home in Wallingford marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day by watching the services held in Portsmouth and France.

Staff and residents of Waterside Court Care Home watched the services that were attended by King Charles and Queen Camilla, Prince William, and many veterans who were involved eight decades ago.

They were interested to see the ceremonies honouring the bravery of the veterans and telling the stories of those who fought.

The care home also welcomed military trucks into its car park for the residents to see.

Clem Heriman, general manager at Waterside Court Care Home, said: "Many of our residents can remember the D-Day Landings and we all know what it meant for our country so we wanted to mark the date, follow the ceremonies and listen to our residents’ memories of the war and the experiences they lived through."

One resident said: "I remember all the family gathering around the radio to listen to the news and hear of the progress our servicemen were making on the beaches in Normandy.

"It was such a pivotal moment in the war and we all knew the importance of how those missions turned out. I really can't believe it is 80 years ago."

Waterside Court Care Home is run by Barchester Healthcare, and provides residential and respite care.
