The resignation of a city politician means a by-election is on the cards with fellow Green colleagues saying they'll miss the "powerful advocate".

Former councillor Alistair Morris, who represented the Marston ward, has stood-down from his role due to "health reasons".

Mr Morris was first elected in 2022 and does not wish to comment at this stage.

The city council is yet to respond to a request for comment but reports suggest a by-election is likely for next week.

Chris Jarvis, leader of the Green Party Group on Oxford City Council said: “I would like to thank Alistair for his brilliant and dedicated service to his local community.

"He has been a powerful advocate for local residents and always brought their concerns into the council chamber.

“In the last two years, Alistair has consistently pushed the city council to do more to protect the local environment and create a more sustainable food system, as well as empowering residents in Marston to improve their local community.

“Alistair will be much missed on the city council, but the Green Party is incredibly thankful for the work he has done to make our city a better, fairer and greener place to live.”

St Mary's ward Green councillor Emily Kerr added: "We’ll all really miss Al from the team and I’ll personally miss his deep knowledge of community engagement especially around gardens and growing.

"He’s made a great contribution to making Oxford fairer and greener."
