A mega-football tournament in Crowmarsh has seen thousands of players and supporters flock to the region for another year of competition.

The Wallingford and Crowmarsh Football Club hosted the event which has now been running for more than 25 years - bringing together around 200 local teams and 1400 youngsters.

Club representative Tom Hill said the event, which has always been held in Crowmarsh, is "now one of the longest (and biggest) youth football tournaments".

Mr Hill said: "We are expecting around 4000 players, coaches, and parents throughout the weekend."

"We had over 200 teams across the weekend. Most are local and from Oxfordshire and Berkshire, with a few from surrounding counties.

"Many teams camp at local facilities and make the most of Crowmarsh and Wallingford's shops and facilities."

He said the money made as a result of the competition enabled the club to keep registrations low, and to offer "football for all, across all levels at grassroots through to our men's 1st team competing at step 5 level football".

There were 15 age groups competing across the weekend from the U7s to U16s sides which includes both boys/mixed and girls competitions.

Mr Hill said the games kicked off at 9am with the finals finishing off the excitement from 4-6pm on Sunday, June 2.

He said: "Most age groups split out into a cup, plate and shield competition, to give every team the chance to win a good trophy."

"The presentations at the end of each day are the highlight.

"We give out over 100 individual trophies and 400 medals, always resulting in amazing team photos!"

Players and supporters had the chance to enjoy fantastic facilities, a barbecue, refreshments, a raffle and a bouncy castle with many visitors also branching outside to support local business.

The positive weekend follows recent disappointment after the cancellation of the Crowfest fundraising event.

The team behind the festival, to raise funds for the Wallingford and Crowmarsh Football Club, was forced to cancel after lower than expected ticket sales.

One of the organisers Jake Ramshaw previously said the future of the Crowfest event was uncertain, but pointed to events like the football tournament over the weekend as another great thing happening for the club.

Mr Ramshaw said there were plenty of other ways to support the local club through volunteering roles in administration or coaching.

"We're always looking for support," he said.

Wallingford & Crowmarsh Football Club is the result of a merger between Crowmarsh Youth Football Club and Wallingford Town AFC, and all funds raised as part of the tournament are used to continue running the club.
