A Bicester man has shared the success of his recent pentathlon competition in which he won gold.

On Sunday May 26, David Kuester, aged 80, won gold in the male 80 plus age group British Masters Weight (Throws) Pentathlon Championships.

A pentathlon is an athletic event comprising five different events for each competitor.

The competition, held at the Horspath Stadium in Oxford, saw overcast and wet conditions, but that did not stop Mr Kuester taking home gold with 2279 points altogether.

Mr Kuester has been a competing athlete for over 55 years and a qualified track and field coach since 1976.

He is also the founder and life member of Bicester Athletics Club.

Mr Kuester said: "Now in my 80s, I am always overjoyed that I am still competing and doing so well.

"Despite still suffering a bad right shoulder injury, I was very pleased with my overall performance in my first ever male 80 plus competition.

"I have competed in five world championships so far, mainly in Europe and Australia, as it is always self funded and often too expensive to go far."

Mr Kuester's next competition is the Midland Masters Athletic Club championships, taking place in Nuneaton on June 23.
