TREE roots have damaged the pavement outside Oxford Rail Station leading to the closure of bus stops.

The Oxford Mail reported on Wednesday (May 29) that several bus stops outside the railway station would close due to health and safety fears regarding trees in the area.

These fears have now been revealed to be related to the tree roots which have damaged the path outside the station according to Great Western Railway.

A GWR spokesperson said: “The situation with tree roots causing damage to the pavement outside the station is worsening, so we have put measures in place for the safety of customers.

“We will be meeting with Network Rail and local stakeholders over the coming weeks in an attempt to identify a solution to the problem.”

Oxford City Council told the Oxford Mail that they will be engaging in discussions with Great Western Railway and National Rail to seek a resolution.

Several Oxford buses will no longer stop at the city centre railway station due to this issue with the 1 and 14 Stagecoach services being diverted until further notice.

The bus company revealed on Tuesday (May 27) that multiple bus stops had been closed as a result of the concerns.

A spokesperson for Stagecoach said: “We have been told that due to health and safety concerns regarding the trees at the forecourt, some bus stops have had to close.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, albeit out of our control.”
