A Didcot couple have received a national award in recognition of their efforts to improve people’s lives.

Pat and David Lang were triumphant in the ‘Achieving Together’ category at the annual Oddfellows Making a Difference Awards held in Llandudno on May 28.

The accolade, presented to the couple by society chairman Barbara Needham, acknowledges those working as a team to improve the lives of fellow members and foster the best possible conditions within the Oddfellows Society and its branches.

The Oddfellows is one of the oldest and largest friendly societies in the UK with nearly 40,000 members across its 99 branches nationwide.

David, a retired train planning manager, said: "I suppose I'm a little embarrassed really, but very proud at the same time.

"It has never been about being rewarded. We love doing what we do – it is as simple as that."

Pat, a former school teaching assistant, said she was "honoured".

She continued: "We have much to thank the Oddfellows for and have met so many lovely people. With David by my side we’ve done a lot."

As long time members of the Oddfellows' Three Counties Branch at Reading, Pat and David have been a key part of the society for more than 50 years.

Apart from serving as branch chairman five times between them, the couple also volunteer as welfare visitors, maintaining a relationship with around 50 members through in-person visits, telephone calls, and correspondence.

Furthermore, they are part of the branch's committee, meaning they assist in making decisions that directly impact the lives of their fellow members.

David is also a trustee, which sees him discuss the award of Benevolence Grants and guide people to receiving other benefits such as convalescence.

They coordinate an annual Christmas lunch event that has managed to raise more than £2,100 since 2009 for the Oddfellows’ HA Andrews Memorial Fund, which funds medical research projects.

The couple have also become well known among members for supplying food at Oddfellows events and committee meetings.

Debbie Jex, district secretary at Reading Oddfellows, said: "Pat and David will do anything for anyone.

"They are true Oddfellows. They work very well together and always do this with good humour – lots of this in fact.

"They are like a double act, and David is the butt of many of Pat's jokes.

"They always give it their all. They are a wonderful team. I’m extremely proud that they have won this award."

Oddfellows members can access a range of benefits including events, care and welfare support and a travel club.
