Several bins in Oxford have been left uncollected after “unforeseen circumstances” as householders complain about the stench and flies.

Recycling bins in some of the city’s streets were not taken away on Tuesday morning after an unknown issue.

This meant that bins outside houses in Lye Valley were not collected as they should have been and instead left full outside properties.

Residents in these areas will not face a long wait for their bins to be collected though as it was confirmed that the collection would now take place on Wednesday.

Oxford Direct Services (ODS) addressed the issue with a statement on Tuesday afternoon.

A spokesperson for ODS said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, some recycling bins have not been collected today in Lye Valley.

“If your bin was not collected, please leave it out. Our collection crew will empty these tomorrow.

“Thank you for your understanding.”

It comes as there have also been issues with bins being uncollected in Sunnymead and Cutteslowe.

One householder, who did not wish to be named, said the bins have not been collected for 18 days.

"It’s foul. They are overflowing and stink," he said.

"When they do come they just chuck stuff all over the road. The flies are insane."

ODS, which is owned by Oxford City Council, manages recycling and rubbish collections for more than 1,400 businesses and 60,000 households in and around Oxford.
