A group of travellers have pitched up at a recreation ground in Witney.

Travellers arrived at the Burwell Recreation Ground and Park off Thorney Leys with the first reports of their presence surfacing yesterday evening (Monday, May 27).

Oxfordshire County Council attended the site this morning (Tuesday, May 28) with a spokesperson confirming "normal legal procedures" have started.

Town councillor for Burwell, David Edwards-Hughes took to social media last night to make residents aware.

It is also understood Thames Valley Police has been informed.

Mr Edwards-Hughes said: "Thank you to local residents who were quick to inform me that travellers have pitched up at Burwell Field.

"I reported them straight away to the council team responsible and alerted Thames Valley Police.

"I understand that the county council have attended the site and I hope they will now work with Thames Valley Police to facilitate their swift eviction."

A Witney Town Council spokesperson said: "Witney Town Council is aware of an illegal encampment on-site at Burwell Recreation Ground and is currently engaged with other authorities in the due process of eviction."

The Oxford Mail has approached Thames Valley Police for a comment on the situation.

It comes after travellers pitched up in Bicester earlier this month.

A clean-up operation was carried out by authorities following an encampment off Manston Close near the Lidl store in Launton Road.
