THE name of a man who died in a Headington house fire has been released by a coroner.

Keith Carpenter, 63, died at his home address in Franklin Road, Headington on April 19 this year.

The incident occurred at around 2am as police officers and firefighters rushed to the blaze.

An inquest opening at Oxford Coroner’s Court on Tuesday (May 28) heard that Mr Carpenter, who was a carer, was verified dead at 2.44am by the Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Team.

Thames Valley Police notified the public about the death and stated that a woman and a child had both been taken to hospital and were receiving treatment. They have since been released.

A police cordon was in place from the early hour of the morning throughout the day as firefighters continued to tackle the blaze.

Forensics teams were also sighted at the location as investigations into the incident were carried out.

The inquest opening heard that the cause of Mr Carpenter’s death is ‘currently unascertained’.

County Councillor for Headington and Quarry Roz Smith reacted to the news and believed it came as a shock for the quiet area.

“It is tragic news whenever you hear about a house fire because it affects so many people,” she said.

“My condolences to the family and friends and I have already seen a lot of reaction on local social media giving a lot of sympathy to the family.”

Assistant coroner Nicholas Graham has set a date for a full inquest to take place at the same court on September 9 at 10am.
