A corner shop in Oxfordshire received an atrocious hygiene rating following a recent inspection.

Gold Star Off License on Ock Street in Abingdon was visited by Vale Of White Horse District Council’s Environmental Health team on Tuesday, March 19.

The inspection found that major improvements were ‘necessary’ and, as a result, the eatery was handed a lowly one-out-of-five hygiene rating.

One of the key problems which was outlined by the report as a cause of concern for the inspectors was the management of food safety at the venue.

This required ‘major improvement’ according to inspectors who were less than impressed with what they found at the premises.

This refers to whether there is a system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat.

It also concerns whether there is evidence that staff know about food safety and if the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

The hygienic handling of food was also slammed by the inspectors with this section being rated as requiring ‘improvement’.

This includes having an appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene.

Gold Star Off License’s cleanliness and condition of both the facilities and the building were rated as ‘generally satisfactory’ following the snap inspection by the environmental health team.

This refers to the preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage of food.
