A damaged bollard which appears to have been uprooted from the earth has sparked debate among householders in the area.

The Oxford traffic filter, on Crescent Road in Temple Cowley, is precariously balanced over the road and has broken up the pavement into several chunks.

City councillor Anna Railton for the Hinksey Park ward happened to stumble upon the sorry looking pavement stub and was prompted to take to social media to say "BOLLARD DOWN".

The damaged traffic filter was also reported on 'Fix My Street'.

Some residents took to social media to speculate over the cause of the bollard damage.

One Twitter user, Clay Denizen, said: "Reversing HGV seems likely."

Another, Gordon Buxton, said: "Bl***y careless cyclists."

Someone going by the name 'AZB' concluded: "Looks like a reckless pedestrian took that corner too fast and skidded into the bollard.

"We need to bring in licenses and road tax for these pesky pedestrians."

A county council spokesman said: "This bollard appears to be located at the junction of Cresent Road and Leafield Road which are both unclassified roads, which means Oxford City Council has claimed responsibility for their maintenance under Section 42 of Highways Act 1980.

"Consequently, the making safe of this defect and possible replacement is the responsibility of Oxford City Council via Oxford Direct Services."

A city council spokesman said: "ODS were notified about the bollard on Friday, April 26 in the afternoon.

"It was investigated in the morning of Monday, April 29.

"A repair was completed before 12:30pm the same day."
