A JURY heard that a man accused of attempting to rape a student at a music festival was ‘extremely intoxicated’ upon arrest.
Lee Lewis, 26, is on trial at Oxford Crown Court charged with attempted rape, assault by penetration, and sexual assault.
He was arrested at the annual This is Oxford Festival which takes place at the playing fields of Oxford Brookes University’s Wheatley Campus on May 18, 2019.

A jury has heard that as a girl was leaving the event, a person allegedly tried to rape the student until security staff were flagged down by two witnesses.
Lewis, of Ipswich, was arrested at the scene but denies being the perpetrator, telling police he was trying to help the girl as she was attacked by two other different men.
During the trial on Wednesday (April 1), several police officers attended court to give evidence about Lewis’s arrest.
The arresting officer commented that Lee was ‘extremely intoxicated’ when police arrived at the festival.
He said: “The first thing he said was, ‘I didn’t even touch her’ and added that the allegations ‘were hogwash’.”
Another officer, who arrived last to the scene, added that Lewis appeared ‘distressed’ before his arrest.

He said: “He appeared quite distressed and was quite upset and another thing I noticed was how intoxicated he was at the time.”
The jury heard that Lewis was prevented from going to the toilet by the event’s security guards who had first apprehended him as to ‘prevent to loss of potential evidence’.
He was then arrested and taken to the police station and DNA swabs were taken from his hands and mouth.
Earlier in the trial, it was heard that Lewis had spoken to the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, while at the festival and had given her his number.
The girl said she had planned to delete it ‘straightaway’.
Prosecutor Brain Reece told the jury during opening there is no dispute the girl was assaulted but the issue is by whom.
He said the girl was walking alone at the festival off College Close when she was ‘dragged to the floor, grabbed around her throat and held down’.

Lewis told police that he had heard the girl being assaulted and tried to help her but she had struck his face and he ‘reacted’ by grabbing her throat.
He previously told police his injuries were from being drunk and falling over.
The trial continues.
