No injuries have been reported following the incident.
The manager of Angel and Greyhound pub opposite the Old Black Horse, Nick West, first believed the actual pub was on fire due to the amount of smoke.
He said: “There was a lot of smoke suddenly appearing from the car park. We thought the pub was on fire.
“I went to have a look and saw a lot of smoke coming from a silver car with three people standing around it.
“There was a fire under the car, so I shouted at the people to move out of the area.
“Luckily, as soon as they moved away, the petrol tank exploded with a big bang and a lot of smoke.
“The fire crew turned up and cordoned off the area and connected the hoses to the main on the road and sorted it all very quickly and efficiently."
